Can I clean bedroom mold myself or need professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It's been there a while and I'm worried it's affecting our sleep, as we've both been waking up with stuffy noses. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, and what would that likely cost for a single room?

The black spots behind your headboard are a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round AC use. The wall likely gets cold from the AC, and when warm, humid air hits it, condensation forms – creating a perfect environment for mold. The stuffy noses you're experiencing are a very typical reaction to mold exposure, especially during sleep when you're inhaling it for hours.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt cleaning yourself. However, do not use bleach. It's mostly water, which feeds the mold roots inside the wall, and the chlorine evaporates quickly, leaving the organic matter behind. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, but more importantly, identify and fix the moisture source. Move the headboard away from the wall to improve air circulation and wipe down any condensation regularly.

Given that it's behind furniture and has been there a while, the growth within the wall cavity is likely more extensive than what's visible on the surface. This is where DIY efforts usually fail. For persistent, recurring, or larger patches, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Remediation here involves specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers to contain spores during removal, followed by antimicrobial coating to prevent regrowth. The cost for a single room isn't fixed; it depends entirely on the extent of the infestation within the wall. You would need to request an on-site inspection from a certified company to get an accurate assessment and quote. Look for providers who can explain the process and provide documentation of the results, not just those who spray and leave.
