Can I clean black bathroom grout myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment's master bathroom has been turning black for a while now. It started as a few spots after the humid weather a couple of months ago but it's slowly spreading up the wall near the shower, and the room always has a damp, earthy smell no matter how much I clean. I’m worried it's behind the walls. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach solution myself, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Surface mold on grout can often be cleaned yourself, but your description of a spreading pattern and persistent earthy smell strongly suggests moisture is trapped within the wall. This is a common issue in Dubai bathrooms where year-round AC use creates significant temperature differentials, leading to condensation inside walls, especially if the vapor barrier was compromised during construction.

For a small, surface-level spot, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner can be effective. Avoid bleach; it only removes surface color and does not address the root moisture problem, allowing regrowth.

Given the spread up the wall and the constant damp smell, a DIY clean is a temporary fix. The mold is likely thriving behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source—often a leaking pipe, failed sealant, or condensation buildup. Remediation typically involves removing affected tiles and grout, treating the underlying structure, and ensuring proper drying before reinstalling. This prevents structural damage and recurring health issues from airborne spores.
