Can I clean black bathroom mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and it's spreading to the ceiling in the corner. It's been getting worse since the humidity really kicked in a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I squeegee after a shower, the smell is still there. I'm in an older building in Deira. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to handle it?

Based on your description of black discoloration spreading from the grout to the ceiling, accompanied by a persistent musty smell, you are likely dealing with a significant mold colony, not just surface staining. The high humidity in Deira, especially in older buildings with potentially less effective ventilation, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold.

While a supermarket bleach solution can remove surface discoloration on non-porous surfaces, it is ineffective for porous materials like grout and ceiling drywall. Bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots growing deep within these materials, causing the problem to return worse than before. The smell is a key indicator that the microbial activity is deep-seated.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture—which could be a hidden leak, condensation within the wall, or inadequate sealing—and assess the full extent of the contamination. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing the affected materials, and applying specialized antimicrobial treatments, not just bleach.

For a proper assessment and a lasting solution to the problem, I advise calling our team at Saniservice. You can reach us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
