Can I clean black bathroom mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the bathroom tiles in my Jumeirah apartment is turning black, especially behind the toilet where it’s always a bit damp. It’s been spreading for a couple of months and I’m worried it’s making my allergies worse. Is this something I can tackle myself with a good cleaner from Ace Hardware, or should I just call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Black bathroom mold in a Dubai apartment is extremely common due to the high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. The area behind your toilet is a prime spot because of persistent dampness.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 10 square feet), you can attempt cleaning yourself. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store, not just bleach, as bleach only removes the colour and not the root structure. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the grout thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dried with a fan afterward. The key is not just cleaning but eliminating the moisture source; run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower.

However, if the discoloration has penetrated deep into the grout or is recurring despite your efforts, the mold may have spread behind the tiles. Scrubbing surface growth in this case is a temporary fix. For persistent, recurring, or large areas of mold, a professional assessment is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and perform air or swab tests to identify the species, which is important if your allergies are worsening. In many cases, the only permanent solution is to remove and replace the compromised grout to eradicate the root system.
