Can I clean black mold from AC leak myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a small patch of black, fuzzy stuff spreading on the skirting board behind the bed. It smells really damp. Is this something I can safely clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai to deal with it?

Based on the description of a persistent AC leak leading to visible black, fuzzy growth and a damp smell, this is a situation I strongly advise against handling yourself. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, what you see on the skirting board is likely just the surface manifestation. The moisture has almost certainly wicked into the wall cavity, the carpet, and the underlay, where a much larger colony is probably thriving.

Using household products like vinegar or bleach is ineffective and potentially dangerous. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration on non-porous materials but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) inside porous building materials. It can also release harmful biocide fumes, especially in an enclosed space. This provides a false sense of security while the hidden mold continues to grow and release spores.

The UAE's strict health and environmental regulations emphasize proper remediation to protect indoor air quality and occupant health. For a case involving HVAC leaks and structural components, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and specialized tools to assess the full extent of contamination hidden from view. The remediation process involves containing the area with negative air pressure, safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials (like that skirting board and carpet section), and using industrial-grade HEPA filtration and EPA-approved antimicrobials to ensure complete eradication.
