Can I clean black mold from AC leak myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a patch of black mold on the back wall. My husband has been sneezing a lot more than usual, and I’m worried it’s connected. Is this something we can clean ourselves with bleach, or do we absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on the symptoms you've described, particularly your husband's increased sneezing, this is a situation that warrants immediate professional attention. In the UAE's humid climate, AC condensation leaks are a primary cause of mold growth. The "black mold" you see is likely just the tip of the iceberg; the moisture has almost certainly penetrated the wall cavity, creating a hidden reservoir of contamination.

Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root structure (hyphae) deep within. More critically, bleaching can agitate the colony, causing a significant release of mycotoxins and spores into your bedroom's air, potentially exacerbating respiratory issues. DIY attempts often spread the contamination to other areas of the home.

Dubai Municipality has strict guidelines for indoor environmental quality, and improper handling can violate these standards. A certified professional inspection is absolutely necessary. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the full extent of the water damage and air sampling to identify the spore types and concentration levels, which is crucial for understanding the health risk.

For a situation involving HVAC systems, visible growth, and health symptoms, professional remediation is the only safe and compliant solution. Our team at Saniservice is certified in the proper containment, removal, and hygienization protocols to ensure the mold is eradicated at its source and your indoor air quality is restored. Please do not attempt to clean this yourself. Call us for a comprehensive assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
