Can I clean black mold from AC leak myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit into the closet in our second bedroom, and I’ve just discovered a patch of black mold on the back wall and some clothes. It’s been humid for the last couple of weeks and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach and vinegar, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here in Dubai?

Based on the conditions you've described—an AC leak in a Jumeirah apartment leading to black mold on a wall and belongings—this is not a situation for a DIY approach. The high humidity and persistent moisture from the AC leak create the perfect environment for mold to thrive and penetrate porous materials like drywall and fabric.

While bleach and vinegar are common suggestions, they are surface-level solutions. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces as it does not kill the mold roots and can add moisture, exacerbating the problem. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing a significant health risk.

In the UAE, the climate necessitates year-round AC use, which leads to constant condensation issues. A professional inspection is critical to identify the exact extent of the contamination, the mold species (some black molds are highly toxic), and the source of the moisture. Remediation requires industrial-grade HEPA filtration, antimicrobial agents, and specialized techniques to safely remove the mold and contain the spores, followed by repairing the AC leak to prevent immediate recurrence.

For a situation involving an ongoing water source and contamination on building materials and contents, we strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified team at Saniservice uses advanced thermal imaging and moisture meters to diagnose the full scope of the problem in line with Dubai Municipality guidelines.
