Can I clean black mold from AC leak myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold on the wall behind the wardrobe. It’s been slowly getting bigger over the last couple of weeks and I’m worried it’s making my allergies worse. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

It depends on the extent. A small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface like tile can often be managed with proper precautions. However, mold from an AC leak in Dubai is a systemic issue, not just a surface one. The visible patch is likely just the fruiting body; the root structure can penetrate deep into porous materials like drywall and concrete behind it.

Bleach is not recommended as it only bleaches the surface color and its high water content can feed the mold roots. Vinegar can be effective on non-porous surfaces but will not address the root system embedded in the wall. The core issue is the ongoing moisture from the AC leak; until that is professionally repaired by an HVAC technician, the mold will return.

Given the location (Jumeirah with high humidity), the involvement of a wardrobe (which traps moisture and limits air circulation), and your worsening allergy symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the full extent of water damage hidden within the wall cavity, which is almost certainly more widespread than the visible spot.

Proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like affected drywall or insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and treating the area with EPA-approved biocides. For a confirmed allergy sufferer, this is not a DIY task, as improper cleaning will aerosolize spores and exacerbate your symptoms. Companies with their own microbiology lab can also provide air or swab testing to identify the species, which helps assess the health risk and verify the cleanup's effectiveness.
