Can I clean black mold from my ceiling corner myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this weird black speckled pattern growing along the corner where the bedroom wall meets the ceiling. It’s an interior room without any windows, and I’m worried the AC vent condensation is causing it, especially with the humidity lately. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, or is this a job for a professional company here in Dubai?

The black speckled pattern is likely mould, and it's a common issue here due to condensation from AC vents meeting Dubai's high humidity. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask, safety goggles, and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact.

Turn off the AC in that room to prevent spreading spores. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with four parts water; vinegar is often more effective than bleach on porous surfaces like drywall. Lightly mist the area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub gently with a disposable cloth. Dry the area completely with a fan to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, because this is on a ceiling and likely stems from a persistent condensation issue within the AC system or a lack of ventilation, DIY cleaning is often a temporary fix. The mould will likely return unless the underlying moisture source is identified and resolved. This is a very common problem in windowless interior rooms here.

For recurring mould or if the area is larger than a square foot, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the exact source of water intrusion and conduct air or swab testing to identify the mould species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. Proper remediation addresses the root cause to prevent it from coming back.
