Can I clean black mold in grout myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bedroom closet has been turning black for a couple of months now. It started as a few spots but it's slowly spreading, and I'm worried it's black mold, especially since the closet is on an interior wall and feels a bit damp. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. Is this something I can safely clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

The black discoloration in your grout is likely mold, given the dampness you describe. In Dubai's climate, interior spaces like closets on AC-cooled walls are prime for condensation, creating the constant moisture mold needs.

For a small, surface-level area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt cleaning. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the grout with a stiff brush and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner. Bleach is less effective on porous surfaces like grout—it may bleach the color but often leaves the mold roots intact.

However, the recurring dampness is the critical issue. If the mold returns within a few weeks, the moisture source is still active. This could be condensation from the AC, a hidden pipe leak, or moisture wicking through the wall from a bathroom. In this case, DIY cleaning is a temporary fix.

Professional inspection is advised to identify and resolve the underlying moisture problem. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the source. For persistent or larger infestations, remediation ensures it’s removed safely without spreading spores. A certified company can also provide a lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which is important if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities.
