Can I clean black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been really humid lately. Is this something I can just clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to check it out?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection and likely professional remediation. The presence of black, speckled patches on an exterior wall, combined with Dubai's high humidity and the use of year-round air conditioning, creates a classic scenario for significant mold growth. The wall likely suffers from condensation due to the temperature differential between the cool interior and the hot, humid exterior, providing the perfect moisture source for mold.

While superficial mold on a non-porous surface can sometimes be addressed with a detergent solution, using bleach is not recommended. Bleach does not kill mold on porous materials like drywall and wood; it only bleaches the visible color, allowing the root structure to continue growing unseen. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home and HVAC system, significantly increasing exposure risks and the scope of the problem.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is not just about cleaning; it's about identifying and resolving the underlying moisture issue to prevent recurrence. A certified professional from a company like Saniservice will conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and possibly air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the infestation. The remediation process involves containment of the affected area, use of HEPA filtration devices to clean the air, safe removal of contaminated porous materials, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobial solutions. Finally, we identify and rectify the source of the moisture.

For your safety and to ensure the problem is resolved permanently, I strongly advise against a DIY approach. Please contact our experts for a comprehensive assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
