Can I clean black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots in the corner of our bedroom closet on the exterior wall. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company here in Dubai to handle it?

Based on the description, you are likely dealing with a mold colony, potentially Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") or another species like Cladosporium or Aspergillus. The location on an exterior wall, combined with Dubai's recent high humidity and constant air conditioning use, is a classic scenario. AC units create significant temperature differentials between the cold interior walls and the hot, humid exterior, leading to condensation—the primary cause of mold growth here.

For a small, localized area (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be attempted. However, bleach is ineffective and potentially dangerous as it does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) and can release harmful fumes, especially in an enclosed space. A diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution is a better alternative. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. The crucial step is to identify and correct the moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return rapidly.

Given the mold is on an exterior wall, the issue may be more complex than surface condensation, potentially involving a leak or inadequate insulation. For any area larger than 1m², a recurring problem, or if you have health concerns (allergies, asthma), professional inspection and remediation are strongly recommended. UAE regulations, particularly in rented properties, often require certified professionals to handle remediation to ensure it is done to standard and to provide documentation for landlords or future sales.

Our company, Saniservice, specializes in this. We conduct a comprehensive inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species and root cause. Our certified technicians then perform containment and removal using industrial-grade HEPA filtration, ensuring the spores are not spread throughout your home.
