Can I clean black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I've just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been super humid the last few weeks and I think it might be because of that. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or vinegar, or do I need to call in one of those professional mold remediation companies here in Dubai?

Based on your description of the situation, I strongly recommend against attempting to clean this yourself and advise you to call for a professional inspection immediately. The combination of persistent coughing in children and visible black mold growth in a closet, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity, indicates a potentially serious situation that requires expert assessment.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with diluted detergent, the location and extent you describe are concerning. Mold growing on stored fabrics like winter clothing is a significant red flag. These porous materials act as a reservoir, allowing mold to penetrate deep within the fibers. DIY solutions like bleach or vinegar are ineffective on porous surfaces; they may temporarily bleach the visible growth on the surface but will not kill the root system (hyphae) embedded deep within the material. This leads to rapid regrowth. More critically, improper cleaning attempts can aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing the airborne spore count and exacerbating the respiratory issues your children are experiencing.

The climate in Dubai is a major contributing factor. Year-round air conditioning can create significant condensation in concealed spaces like closets, especially when storing damp winter clothes in a humid environment. This creates the perfect breeding ground for mold. A professional inspection will not only identify the exact species of mold (which is critical for understanding the health risks) but also use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source of the humidity, whether it's condensation, a hidden leak, or insufficient ventilation.

For the health of your family and to ensure the mold is eradicated at its source, please contact a certified professional. I recommend calling Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or emailing hello@saniservice.com. Their certified technicians can conduct a thorough assessment, provide a precise remediation plan, and offer solutions to prevent recurrence, which is essential for living in the UAE.
