Can I clean black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's started growing in the corners of our master bedroom closet. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because the closet is on the same wall as the bathroom. The spots are small but pretty dark and the room always feels damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you describe—coughing in children and a consistently damp closet adjacent to a bathroom—this is a situation that warrants immediate and professional attention. The UAE's high humidity, combined with year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold, particularly on cold surfaces where condensation forms, like exterior walls or behind closets.

While small surface mold can sometimes be addressed with a bleach solution, this is often a superficial fix. The dark spots you see are likely just the fruiting body of the mold; the root system (hyphae) can penetrate deep into building materials like drywall and insulation. Bleach does not kill these roots and its high water content can actually feed the mold problem long-term. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic spores, exacerbating respiratory issues.

Given the health symptoms and the probable moisture source from the bathroom (a leaky pipe or seepage through the wall is common here), a DIY approach is not recommended. Professional inspection is crucial. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and extent of contamination, which is almost always greater than what is visible. Remediation then involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and removing affected materials safely.

For your family's health and to ensure the problem is solved permanently, I strongly advise against DIY. Contact our certified team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
