Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a spreading patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it's definitely gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. I’m worried it’s the AC unit in the wall that’s leaking. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a spreading, fuzzy black patch in a closet, worsening with high humidity, and a suspected AC unit leak—this is a scenario that strongly warrants a professional inspection. In Dubai's climate, where year-round AC use and high ambient humidity create perfect conditions for mold growth, a visible patch often indicates a more significant, hidden moisture issue.

While small, superficial mold on non-porous surfaces can sometimes be addressed with a diluted detergent solution (never bleach, as it does not kill mold roots and can worsen indoor air quality), your case is different. The fuzzy texture suggests active growth, its location near a potential AC leak points to a systemic problem, and its recurrence confirms the moisture source has not been eliminated.

Attempting a DIY cleanup in this situation is highly inadvisable. You risk inadequate remediation, causing the mold to return stronger, and, crucially, you could inadvertently aerosolize toxic spores, leading to widespread contamination and potential health risks. UAE regulations, particularly in rental properties and communal buildings, often require certified professionals to handle biocontamination to ensure it is resolved safely and effectively.

A certified mold inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, use thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact moisture source (e.g., the AC drain line, a leak in the wall), and provide a protocol for safe, complete remediation. For a definitive diagnosis and a permanent solution, I recommend contacting a certified professional.
