Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it after moving the heavy furniture. The wall feels a bit damp and it’s spread about the size of a dinner plate. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

Based on the symptoms you describe, especially the persistent coughing in children and the damp wall, it is highly advisable to cease any DIY attempts and seek a professional inspection immediately. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and continuous AC operation create ideal conditions for mold, what you see is often just the surface manifestation of a larger problem. The dampness behind the wardrobe suggests a potential condensation issue from the AC unit or, more seriously, a hidden plumbing leak within the wall cavity.

Cleaning visible growth with bleach is a common misconception. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface pigment without addressing the root hyphae (the mold's root structure). More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize harmful mycotoxins and spores, significantly exacerbating the health risks and contaminating your entire home's air supply.

For a colony of that size, coupled with moisture intrusion and health symptoms, professional remediation is not just recommended—it is essential for your family's safety. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact moisture source, which must be resolved first. We then conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species (e.g., Stachybotrys chartarum, or "black mold," is particularly toxic) and determine the scope of contamination.

The remediation process involves engineering controls: setting up negative air pressure containment with HEPA air scrubbers to prevent cross-contamination, followed by the safe removal of affected porous materials and antimicrobial treatment of the area. This is a technical process governed by IICRC standards to ensure it is done correctly and safely.
