Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, probably from the AC unit on the other side of the wall. It's not huge, maybe the size of a dinner plate, but my husband has started sneezing a lot more in the mornings. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

Based on my professional experience as a certified mold inspector in the UAE, I strongly advise against using supermarket bleach for black mold remediation. Chlorine bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, it can release harmful chlorine fumes, especially in the enclosed, air-conditioned environments typical of Dubai homes, which is a significant health risk.

The symptoms your husband is experiencing—increased sneezing—are classic indicators of mold spore exposure, which can escalate to more severe respiratory issues. Given the mold's location near the AC unit, this suggests a potential condensation issue, a common problem in our humid climate where AC systems create constant temperature differentials. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; the hyphal roots can penetrate deep into the building material, and spores are likely circulating through your AC system.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is not just recommended, it is essential. DIY attempts often aggravate the problem by dispersing a high concentration of spores. We use industry-standard tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the full extent of the moisture intrusion and mold colonization. Our remediation process then involves containment, HEPA filtration, and the application of specialized, non-toxic antimicrobial agents approved for use in the UAE, followed by hygienization to ensure the environment is safe.
