Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Springs. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I’m worried it's spreading. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or is it serious enough that I need to call a professional company to check it out?

Based on your description of the situation in Springs, I strongly advise against attempting to clean the mold yourself with bleach and recommend you call a professional inspection company immediately. The combination of visible black spots, a recent period of high humidity typical of the Dubai climate, and the associated health symptoms in your children is a significant cause for concern.

Bleach is a surface-level biocide that is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wood, which are likely behind your wardrobe. It addresses the visible discoloration but not the root mycological growth, often causing the mold to regrow more aggressively. More critically, disturbing the colony by cleaning it yourself can aerosolize a high concentration of toxic spores and mycotoxins, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially worsening respiratory issues like the coughing you've observed.

The UAE's high humidity, especially during summer and in communities like Springs, creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation within the building envelope. Year-round AC use can contribute to condensation issues if systems are not properly maintained. A certified professional will conduct a comprehensive inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the contamination and the source of moisture. Remediation then involves advanced containment procedures, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial agents to safely and permanently eradicate the colony.

For the health of your family and to ensure the structural integrity of your home, this is not a DIY project. Please contact our team at Saniservice for a certified assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
