Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I’m starting to worry. I pulled their wooden wardrobe away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading behind it. It’s been extra humid the last few weeks and I think the AC isn't drying the room out enough. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate professional attention. The combination of visible black, fuzzy growth, a persistent humidity issue, and health symptoms like your children's coughing strongly indicates a significant mold infestation.

Attempting to clean this yourself with bleach is not recommended. Bleach is a surface-level disinfectant and is ineffective on porous materials like wood, which your wardrobe is made of. It may temporarily remove the visible color but will not address the root cause—the moisture and the hyphae (root system) penetrating the wood. Furthermore, disturbing the mold by scrubbing it can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, drastically worsening the indoor air quality and potentially exacerbating respiratory issues.

The climate in Deira, especially with high humidity overwhelming your AC's dehumidification capacity, creates the perfect environment for toxic black mold (like Stachybotrys chartarum) to thrive. This is a serious health risk, particularly for children.

UAE regulations and best practices for indoor air quality require that such contamination be handled by certified professionals. We use industry-standard protocols: first, a comprehensive inspection and air quality testing to identify the species and spore count. Remediation involves containment of the area with negative air pressure, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the application of specialized biocides and sealants designed for porous wood, not just surface cleaners.

For the safety of your family, I strongly advise against a DIY approach. Please contact our certified team for a professional inspection and remediation plan. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
