Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that’s slowly spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. I just pulled out the winter clothes we stored and found a patch about the size of a dinner plate on the wall behind them. It’s been really humid lately and that wall faces the outside. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants professional intervention. While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with a bleach solution, several factors in your case indicate a more serious problem. The size (a dinner plate is significant), the location (an exterior wall suggests potential moisture intrusion from outside), and the health symptoms (coughing in children) all point to a need for expert assessment.

In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth within wall cavities, especially on exterior walls where condensation can form. Simply cleaning the visible surface with bleach is a temporary fix; it will not address the underlying moisture source or the hyphae (root system) that has likely penetrated the drywall. Disturbing it yourself also risks releasing a high concentration of spores into your home's air, potentially exacerbating your children's respiratory issues.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for environmental health and remediation to ensure occupant safety. A certified professional company like Saniservice will conduct a thorough inspection using moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the moisture source and the full extent of the contamination. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing affected porous materials like drywall, employing HEPA filtration to clean the air, and applying professional-grade antimicrobials.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is solved permanently, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate assessment.
