Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. The wall feels a bit damp to the touch. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional mold removal company?

Based on your description, this situation requires a professional assessment and likely professional remediation. The combination of visible black spots, a damp wall, and associated health symptoms in your children strongly indicates an active mold colony that has penetrated the building materials.

In the UAE's high-humidity climate, mold growth behind furniture is common due to condensation and lack of air circulation from year-round AC use. While surface cleaning with a diluted bleach solution can remove superficial discoloration, it is often ineffective for the root problem. Bleach does not kill mold on porous surfaces like drywall or plaster; it only bleaches the visible pigment, allowing the organism to regrow. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize harmful spores, exacerbating respiratory issues like the coughing you've observed.

The dampness you feel suggests a potential moisture intrusion, which could be from a small plumbing leak, capillary rise from the slab, or condensation within the wall cavity. This underlying moisture issue must be identified and rectified; otherwise, the mold will persistently return.

For the health of your family and the integrity of your property, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air quality tests to identify the exact species and extent of the contamination, as well as the moisture source. This is crucial for developing an effective remediation plan that complies with local guidelines.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. For a proper assessment and a permanent solution, please call our experts at Saniservice on 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can determine if the situation is contained or if more extensive remediation is necessary.
