Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading because my allergies have been acting up. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

The presence of black mold on an exterior wall, especially behind furniture, is a common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the constant use of air conditioning, which can create significant temperature differentials and lead to condensation. While a small, superficial patch might be tempting to address yourself, I strongly advise against using supermarket bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall as it only bleaches the surface mold without killing the root structure, and its high water content can actually feed the mold colony, leading to a worse recurrence.

The critical first step is a professional inspection. The visible patch is often just the "tip of the iceberg"; the mold growth within the wall cavity could be far more extensive. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and borescopes to assess the full extent of the moisture intrusion and mold colonization. This is essential for developing an effective remediation protocol. Furthermore, your worsening allergies are a significant indicator that mycotoxins and spores are already airborne in your bedroom, which DIY cleaning will exacerbate.

For a confirmed, contained issue, a professional remediation company like Saniservice would utilize EPA-approved, specialized biocides—not bleach—followed by HEPA vacuuming and sealing of the affected materials. For more severe contamination, controlled removal of the affected drywall and insulation is necessary to protect the property's structure and occupant health, following UAE best practices for containment and air filtration.

Given your symptoms and the location of the growth, a DIY approach is not recommended. To get a definitive assessment and a safe, permanent solution, please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection.
