Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s on the wall and the weather's been so humid lately that the room just doesn't feel dry. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies in Dubai?

As a certified mold inspector here in the UAE, this is a very common question, especially with our high humidity levels. The black spots you've found behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation mold, exacerbated by poor air circulation.

While small patches (less than 1 square meter) can sometimes be addressed by a homeowner, I strongly advise against using bleach. Bleach is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots deep in porous materials like drywall, and its fumes are highly toxic in an enclosed space, potentially worsening respiratory issues like the coughing your children are experiencing.

For a small area, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product is safer. However, given that the mold is on a wall (a porous surface) and you already have health symptoms, a DIY approach is not recommended. You likely only see the surface growth; the hyphae (root structure) can penetrate deep into the building material.

In Dubai, professional remediation is governed by strict guidelines from Dubai Municipality. We follow protocols that include full containment of the area, advanced HEPA filtration air scrubbers to capture airborne spores, and specialized antimicrobial agents to safely remove the colony at its root. This is crucial to prevent cross-contamination and protect your family's health.

Given the health symptoms and the location, a professional inspection is essential to determine the full extent. We can identify the moisture source (often a small leak or severe condensation) to prevent rapid regrowth.

For a proper assessment and safe removal, please call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. It's not worth risking your family's health with a potentialy hazardous DIY attempt.
