Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's been so humid lately I think it's been growing. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Thank you for your question. This is a very common concern in Dubai, especially given our high humidity levels and the constant use of air conditioning, which can create significant condensation and ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture and on cold walls.

First, I strongly advise against using bleach. While it may remove the visible black discoloration, it is ineffective at killing the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall. More critically, bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold colony and encourage regrowth. It also releases harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into your indoor air, which can exacerbate respiratory issues like the coughing your children are experiencing.

The presence of health symptoms is a major red flag. This indicates that the mold colony is active and releasing spores and mycotoxins into your home's air. Disturbing it through improper cleaning can aerosolize these particles, significantly worsening the air quality and potentially intensifying health effects.

For a situation like yours—visible growth covering more than a square foot and accompanied by health symptoms—the UAE's best practice guidelines strongly recommend professional assessment and remediation. Our standard protocol involves a comprehensive inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination, which is often far greater than what is visible.

A professional company like Saniservice uses industry-grade equipment, such as HEPA filtration scrubbers and negative air machines, to contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, and remediate the source of moisture to prevent recurrence. This ensures the problem is solved completely and safely for your family.

Given your children's health, I would not recommend a DIY approach. Please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a confidential consultation. We can provide a definitive assessment and a plan to restore your home to a healthy condition.
