Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has been so humid since the heavy rain a few weeks ago. I just pulled a storage box out from the corner of my bedroom and found a bunch of black fuzzy spots on the wall behind it and on the back of the box. It’s about the size of a dinner plate. Is this something I can clean with vinegar myself, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Based on your description, this is a case that warrants a professional inspection. The combination of Dubai's high humidity, a recent water intrusion event (the heavy rains), and the presence of visible black fungal growth on both a porous material (the drywall) and a semi-porous one (the cardboard box) creates a scenario that goes beyond a simple surface cleaning.

While a small amount of surface mold on non-porous materials like glass or tile can sometimes be addressed with detergent and water, attempting to clean a colony of this size on wall plaster yourself is not advisable. Using vinegar is a common DIY recommendation, but it is ineffective against all mold species and does not address the root cause: moisture. The mold's hyphae (root-like structures) can penetrate deep into the gypsum board, making complete removal with surface cleaning impossible. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your villa.

In the UAE, professional remediation follows strict IICRC guidelines. Our process involves isolating the affected area with containment barriers, using HEPA-filtered negative air machines to capture airborne spores, safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials, and then treating the area with EPA-approved antimicrobial agents. Crucially, we identify and rectify the source of the moisture—in your case, likely lingering dampness from the rain exacerbated by the lack of air circulation behind the furniture.

Given the climate-driven humidity and the potential health risks associated with certain molds, a professional assessment is the safest course of action. I recommend you call our certified inspectors at Saniservice on 800-MOLDS (800-66537) for a thorough evaluation and a definitive remediation plan.
