Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold growing on the back wall of our master bedroom closet. It’s a pretty big patch that we just found, probably from the humidity. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it behind some storage boxes. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning service for something this size?

Based on the symptoms you've described—coughing in children—and the size of the infestation, I strongly recommend against a DIY cleaning attempt with supermarket bleach. Here’s why:

Black mold (often Stachybotrys chartarum) is a toxigenic mold that releases mycotoxins and spores, especially when disturbed. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete block, common in UAE construction. It only bleaches the surface pigment while the root structure (hyphae) remains deep within the material, allowing it to rapidly regrow. More critically, improper cleaning aerosolizes these harmful particles, potentially worsening your family's respiratory issues.

The Dubai climate is a significant factor. Our extreme humidity and year-round AC use create massive condensation issues, particularly on cold exterior walls, which is likely the source of the moisture in your closet. Simply cleaning the visible mold without first identifying and rectifying the underlying moisture source is a temporary and ineffective solution.

Given the health symptoms and the probable size of the infestation (if it's visible, the hidden growth within the wall cavity could be much larger), a professional inspection is absolutely necessary. Our certified inspectors use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture intrusion source and assess the full extent of the contamination. This is crucial for a permanent remediation plan that protects your family's health.

For a situation like this, especially with vulnerable individuals present, professional remediation is the only safe and effective course of action. Please contact us for a comprehensive assessment.
