Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind my bedroom wardrobe. I just moved it today and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of my hand spreading from the corner. It's been insanely humid lately and I'm worried it's making my allergies act up. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that requires immediate professional attention, not a DIY bleach cleanup. The black, fuzzy growth behind the wardrobe, exacerbated by the recent extreme UAE humidity and an AC leak, is a classic scenario for significant hidden mold contamination. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can actually aggravate the problem by releasing spores and failing to address the root moisture issue.

In Dubai's climate, where air conditioning runs year-round, condensation and leaks are a primary cause of mold. The visible patch is likely just the tip of the iceberg; moisture from the AC leak has almost certainly wicked into the wall cavity, insulation, and possibly the wardrobe backing, creating an extensive colony you cannot see. Disturbing it by cleaning attempts will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially causing severe allergic reactions and contaminating your entire apartment.

UAE regulations and best practices for mold remediation, especially for a suspected Stachybotrys (black mold) case of this size, dictate containment, professional-grade HEPA filtration, and removal of contaminated porous materials. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to assess the full extent of the damage behind the wall before creating a remediation protocol.

For your health and to prevent structural damage to the property, I strongly recommend you cease use of that AC unit, avoid the area, and call a professional company immediately. Our team at Saniservice is certified and equipped to handle this safely. We can provide a thorough inspection and remediation plan.
