Can I clean black mold myself or hire professionals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’m worried it’s from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies?

It depends on the size and severity. For a small patch (under one square foot) that you've just discovered, a DIY approach may be sufficient. However, black mold behind furniture in a bedroom, especially with children experiencing nighttime coughing, suggests a longer-term moisture issue that needs proper diagnosis.
In Dubai's climate, this is likely due to condensation from your AC unit or a small, unnoticed leak. Simply cleaning the visible mold won't address the underlying humidity source, and it will almost certainly return. The coughing could be a reaction to the spores now circulating in the room. For a small area, you can clean it with a detergent solution, not bleach. Bleach doesn't penetrate porous surfaces like drywall and its fumes can irritate airways. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and then monitor it closely for regrowth. Given the symptoms and the location, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact moisture source—often a leaking AC drain line or condensation from a poorly insulated cold wall—and assess the full extent. The mold you see is often just the tip of the iceberg; it can spread inside wall cavities. A reputable company will use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the root cause and provide a protocol that includes fixing the water issue, containment during remediation, and verification that spore levels have returned to normal. This is crucial for resolving the health symptoms. |
