Can I clean black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from a black, fuzzy patch I found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants serious attention and likely requires professional intervention. The presence of visible black, fuzzy mold and associated health symptoms like coughing in children strongly suggests a significant infestation.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials like tiles can sometimes be addressed with a detergent solution, using bleach is not recommended. It is largely ineffective on porous surfaces (like drywall or wood behind a wardrobe) as it only bleaches the surface color without killing the root structure. More critically, mixing bleach with other cleaners common in households can produce toxic chlorine gas, creating a severe hazard.

The Dubai climate is a primary catalyst for such issues. Our year-round air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials between cold walls and the humid outdoor air, leading to condensation—the perfect breeding ground for mold. A patch visible behind furniture often indicates a larger, hidden problem within the wall cavity.

Given the health symptoms and the likelihood of a larger infestation, a professional inspection is crucial. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify moisture sources and hidden growth, and air quality tests to determine spore concentration and species type, which is vital for assessing health risks. Remediation involves containment to prevent cross-contamination, specialized HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment of affected materials, not just surface cleaning.

For the safety of your family, I strongly advise against a DIY approach. Please contact our certified team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
