Can I clean black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that’s been spreading on the ceiling in our master bedroom closet. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because this last winter was more humid than usual. It’s a patch about the size of a dinner plate and feels damp.
Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional company to get it tested and removed?

Based on my professional experience as a certified mold inspector in the UAE, I strongly advise against attempting to clean that mold yourself, especially given the health symptoms and the size of the infestation. A patch the size of a dinner plate indicates a significant moisture issue that requires professional assessment.
The dampness you feel suggests an active leak or, more commonly in Dubai, severe condensation due to the high humidity and constant air conditioning use. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and ceiling tiles; it only bleaches the surface color without addressing the root hyphae (the mold's root structure) or the underlying moisture problem. Improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, potentially worsening your children's respiratory issues. In accordance with UAE health and safety guidelines for indoor air quality, a situation involving health symptoms and structural dampness mandates professional intervention. Our standard protocol involves a comprehensive inspection to identify the moisture source (e.g., AC drip pan overflow, poor insulation causing condensation), precise air and surface sampling to confirm the mold type and spore count, and then controlled remediation using industrial-grade HEPA filtration and antimicrobial agents. For your family's health and a permanent solution, I recommend a professional inspection. Contact our team at Saniservice for a thorough assessment.
