Can I clean black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind the guest room dresser. I finally moved the furniture today and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold about the size of a dinner plate spreading from the skirting board. It's been humid lately and I'm worried it's been growing for a while. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on my professional experience as a mold remediation specialist in Dubai, I strongly advise against cleaning that black mold yourself with bleach. The presence of a dinner-plate-sized patch indicates a significant moisture issue, likely from the AC leak you described. In Dubai's high humidity, this is a common catalyst for mold growth.

Bleach is a surface-level disinfectant that does not address the root moisture problem or penetrate porous materials like drywall and skirting boards. The water from your AC has likely saturated these materials, and the visible mold is often just the surface manifestation of a deeper colonization within the wall cavity. Attempting to clean it yourself can agitate the colony, releasing a high concentration of spores into your air and potentially spreading the contamination.

Furthermore, improper handling poses health risks from mycotoxin exposure, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions.

Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for addressing indoor environmental hazards, and a professional assessment is crucial for compliance and safety. Our standard protocol involves a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, safely removing and disposing of affected porous materials, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials—not bleach—to eliminate the colony at its source.

Given the size and the confirmed moisture source, this requires professional intervention. I recommend you contact our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
