Can I clean black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because of the recent humidity. It's a patch about the size of a dinner plate and the wall feels a bit damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

Based on your description, you absolutely need a professional inspection and remediation. The combination of a damp wall, a large patch of mold (dinner plate size), and associated health symptoms in your children is a serious concern. In the UAE's climate, particularly in coastal areas like Jumeirah, high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture and within wall cavities, where condensation often forms.

Attempting a DIY cleanup with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. It also poses significant respiratory hazards in an enclosed space, potentially exacerbating your children's coughing. More importantly, the dampness indicates an underlying moisture issue that must be identified and resolved; otherwise, the mold will return rapidly.

Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for environmental health and mold remediation to ensure the safety of occupants. A certified professional from a company like Saniservice will conduct a thorough inspection using moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the full extent of the moisture and hidden mold growth. They will then contain the area, use HEPA filtration to remove airborne spores, safely remove contaminated materials, and apply professional-grade, EPA-approved biocides to eliminate the mold at its root.

Given the health symptoms and the property's value, a professional approach is the only safe and effective solution. I recommend you call Saniservice immediately for a comprehensive assessment at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
