Can I clean black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We keep the AC on constantly but the wall there always feels damp, and it's spread to a few of our shoes and bags over the last couple of months. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to deal with it properly?

As a certified mold remediation specialist in Dubai, I advise against cleaning significant black mold growth yourself, especially with supermarket bleach. The persistent dampness in your closet wall, coupled with the spread to personal items, indicates a serious moisture issue that bleach will not resolve. It only bleaches the surface and does not address the root cause or the hyphae (roots) growing within the building material.

The Dubai climate, with its extreme humidity and year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for condensation and mold growth within wall cavities, often due to inadequate insulation or a breach in the vapor barrier. Your children's coughing is a significant health red flag, as exposure to mold spores can exacerbate respiratory issues.

For a situation of this nature, a professional inspection is mandatory. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact source of the water intrusion hidden behind the walls, which is critical for a permanent solution. DIY attempts can aggravate the problem by dispersing a high concentration of spores throughout your home.

Proper remediation involves containment of the area with negative air pressure, HEPA filtration, safe removal of contaminated porous materials (like drywall and the affected shoes/bags), and antimicrobial treatment of the structure. This is not a cleaning job; it is a technical restoration process governed by strict industry standards.
