Can I clean black mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the bottom edge of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's an interior wall, and with all the humidity lately from the weather, I'm sure that's what caused it. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or a vinegar solution, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here in Dubai?

Based on the description of black speckles along the bottom edge of an interior wall, this is a classic case of mold growth, highly common in Dubai due to the combination of high ambient humidity and constant air conditioning, which leads to significant condensation on cold surfaces. While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a DIY approach, several factors specific to your situation suggest professional involvement is warranted.

Firstly, the location behind a sofa indicates a potential lack of air circulation, creating a micro-climate perfect for mold. More critically, the growth is on a wall, which means the moisture source could be internal, such as a minor pipe leak within the wall cavity, or due to capillary action from the slab. Surface cleaning with bleach or vinegar will only temporarily remove the visible colony; it will not address the hidden moisture source or the root system (hyphae) penetrating the porous wall material. Bleach can also aggravate the problem by adding moisture.

In the UAE, improper remediation can lead to rapid and more widespread recurrence, potentially causing health issues and significant property damage. For any growth covering more than one square meter, or if the source of moisture is not immediately obvious and easily correctable, a professional inspection is strongly recommended.

Our company, Saniservice, utilizes advanced moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to accurately locate the moisture source. We then follow IICRC standards for remediation, which includes containment, HEPA filtration, and the use of specialized antimicrobial agents to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence. For a proper assessment and a lasting solution, it is best to call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
