Can I clean black mold myself or need a specialist?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity lately. It’s a patch about the size of my hand and the wall feels a bit damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call one of those specialist companies in Dubai?

Given the damp wall and your children's symptoms, this requires immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, that dampness suggests a persistent moisture source, likely from condensation or a small leak, which must be addressed first or the mold will return.
For a patch the size of your hand, a careful DIY approach is possible if no one has severe asthma or immune issues. Do not use bleach; it bleaches the mold but doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. A solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner is more effective. Scrub with a stiff brush, ensure excellent ventilation by opening windows, and wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles to avoid inhaling spores. However, the damp wall is the critical issue. If the moisture is from internal condensation due to AC airflow issues, that's a HVAC adjustment. If it's a leak from the exterior or plumbing, it requires repair. Since the problem has been developing and is affecting health, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the moisture source and assess if there's hidden growth inside the wall cavity. They can also perform air quality testing to confirm the mold type and spore count, which is particularly valuable with health symptoms present. For verifiable results, seek a provider that uses a third-party accredited lab for analysis and can show you documented before-and-after data. |
