Can I clean black mold myself or need professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Mirdif. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it while rearranging furniture, so it must have been growing for a while from the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, I strongly advise against attempting to clean this mold yourself. The situation you've described—black mold growth behind furniture, a history of high humidity, and occupants (especially children) exhibiting respiratory symptoms like coughing—is a serious health and safety concern that necessitates professional intervention.

The primary risk with a DIY approach, particularly using bleach, is that it only addresses the surface discoloration. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it does not penetrate to kill the root system (hyphae) of the mold. This leads to rapid regrowth. More critically, the cleaning process will inevitably disturb the colony, releasing a massive concentration of spores and mycotoxins into your indoor air. This can significantly worsen your family's exposure and exacerbate respiratory issues.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold, the source of the moisture must be identified and resolved to prevent recurrence. A professional inspection will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source of the humidity—whether it's a condensation issue from the AC, a minor plumbing leak, or insufficient ventilation. The remediation process itself requires industrial-grade HEPA air scrubbers to contain and filter the air, specialized antimicrobial agents to eliminate the mold at its root, and safe disposal of contaminated materials.

Given the potential health risks to your children, a certified assessment and remediation is the only safe course of action.
