Can I clean black mold with bleach or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It’s on the wall and seems to be getting worse since the weather got more humid. Do you think this is something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call in a professional?

Based on the description of a spreading black spot in a closet where winter clothes are stored, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The high humidity, especially during summer months, combined with potential condensation from year-round AC use and lack of air circulation in a closed closet, creates an ideal environment for mold.
While bleach is a common suggestion, it is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall or grout. Bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold roots deep within the material. It may bleach the visible stain on the surface, giving a false sense of security, but the underlying hyphae (root structure) will remain and regrow. Furthermore, mixing bleach improperly, especially in an enclosed space, can create dangerous chloramine vapors. For a small, isolated area (less than 1 square meter), you may attempt cleaning with a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. However, given that the issue is spreading and located in a bedroom—where airborne spores can affect air quality—this situation warrants a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion, which is critical to preventing recurrence. We then perform air and surface sampling to identify the species, as some types like Stachybotrys (true black mold) require specific containment protocols for safe removal. For a definitive assessment and a remediation plan that complies with local Dubai Municipality health and safety guidelines, I strongly advise against a DIY approach.
