Can I clean black mold with bleach or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the wall behind the guest room dresser. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, speckled stuff about the size of a dinner plate spreading there, and the room has a really damp smell. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call one of those specialist companies in Dubai to handle it?

The black, speckled growth you describe is almost certainly mold, and its location points directly to the AC condensate leak as the source of excess moisture. In Dubai's high humidity, this persistent dampness creates the perfect environment for mold to thrive.

You can attempt to clean a small patch yourself, but bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall. It only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the roots (hyphae) growing within the wall. It also adds more moisture, potentially feeding the problem. A more effective DIY solution is a mixture of distilled white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover, scrubbing the area and allowing it to dry completely.

However, given the size (a dinner plate), the persistent damp smell, and the fact it's on a building material, this situation typically requires a professional assessment. The critical first step is not cleaning but fixing the AC leak; otherwise, the mold will return. A specialist can identify the moisture source, assess the extent of growth within the wall cavity (which is often worse than what's visible), and safely contain and remove the affected materials to prevent spores from spreading. For a verified resolution, the process should include post-remediation testing to confirm the space is truly clean and the humidity is controlled.
