Can I clean black mold with vinegar or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's an interior wall and the room always feels a bit damp, probably because we keep the AC higher at night. I'm worried it's spreading to our belongings. Is this something I can clean with vinegar myself, or do I need to call a professional company to check for a bigger problem?

Vinegar can be effective on surface mold for small, isolated areas. For a few spots in a closet, a solution of distilled white vinegar can kill many common surface molds. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem causing it.
In Dubai’s climate, interior wall mold is often a condensation issue from the temperature differential between a cold AC space and the humid outdoor air. Storing clothes in a closet against an exterior wall can restrict airflow, creating a damp microclimate perfect for mold. The fact the room feels damp confirms a persistent humidity issue. Cleaning with vinegar is a temporary fix if the root cause isn't resolved. You must improve ventilation in the closet, ensure the AC is not set too high at night, and potentially use a desiccant or dehumidifier. For porous materials like drywall or the clothes themselves, vinegar cleaning is often insufficient, and affected items may need professional cleaning or disposal. If the area is larger than one square foot, if it returns after cleaning, or if you suspect it has penetrated the wall, a professional inspection is warranted. They can use moisture meters to find the source of dampness and air sampling to identify the mold type, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation method. DIY attempts on larger problems can inadvertently spread spores throughout your home. |
