Can I clean black mould myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mould starting to form in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the outside wall. I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse, and I’m not sure if it’s just surface level or something deeper. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional mould inspection company to check for moisture in the walls?

Based on the climate in Dubai, with its high humidity levels and constant air conditioning use, the conditions you describe are a classic breeding ground for mold. The location on an outside wall is a significant red flag, as it strongly suggests a hidden moisture issue, such as condensation from the AC system, a small plumbing leak, or a breach in the building envelope allowing humid air to condense inside the wall cavity.
While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a DIY solution like a diluted detergent or a specialized mold cleaner (we do not recommend bleach as it does not kill the roots and can worsen airborne spore dispersal), your situation likely requires professional assessment. The fact it has appeared after two years indicates a new or worsening moisture problem that needs to be identified at its source. Surface cleaning alone will be a temporary fix; the mold will return if the underlying moisture is not resolved. In the UAE, professional mold inspection involves using tools like thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden dampness within walls and moisture meters to quantify the problem. This is critical to prevent structural damage and potential health issues. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment to locate the moisture source, determine the extent of the growth, and provide a protocol for safe, effective remediation. For a definitive diagnosis and a permanent solution, we strongly recommend a professional inspection.
