Can I clean black shower grout or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been turning black for a few months now, and I can’t seem to scrub it away. We keep the AC on all the time, but the windowless bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment never really dries out completely. Is this something I can tackle with a specific cleaning product from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional to reseal everything?

This is likely mold or mildew embedded in the porous grout, a common issue in Dubai's humid, windowless bathrooms where constant AC use isn't enough to prevent condensation.
You can attempt to clean it with a dedicated grout cleaner, hydrogen peroxide, or a diluted bleach solution. Apply it, let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate, then scrub vigorously with a stiff brush. This may lighten it but often fails to remove the root structure if the mold has deeply penetrated. If it returns quickly or the grout is soft and crumbly, the moisture has compromised its integrity. Scrubbing will not solve the underlying problem. In this case, the old grout must be professionally removed and replaced, followed by a high-quality sealant to prevent rapid recurrence. Given the persistent humidity, a professional assessment can determine if there's hidden moisture within the wall that needs addressing. |
