Can I clean black speckles myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the recent humidity, I'm worried it's gotten worse. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or a special spray, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai to check for a bigger problem?

Black speckles in a humid climate like Dubai are often surface mould, but its appearance on an exterior wall is a significant red flag. This typically indicates a moisture source beyond simple indoor humidity, such as a hidden condensation issue within the wall or a small leak from the external building envelope.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a dedicated mould remover spray or a solution of white vinegar. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, this is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture problem isn't resolved. The mould will almost certainly return.

Given the location on an exterior wall and Dubai's persistent high humidity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the exact source of the dampness inside the wall cavity, which is impossible to diagnose visually. This prevents the problem from recurring and protects your property's structure. A proper inspection from a company with its own microbiology lab can also identify the mould species from a tape lift sample, confirming if it's a common, less harmful type or something that requires more extensive remediation.
