Can I clean black wall mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. I think it might be from when we had that really humid spell a couple of months ago and the AC might have struggled. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

For a small patch of mold (less than one square meter) that's only on a non-porous surface like painted drywall, cleaning it yourself can be a temporary solution. A mix of white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can kill surface growth. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection to avoid inhaling spores or irritating your skin.

However, the location behind your sofa is a major red flag. This is a classic Dubai issue: stagnant, humid air gets trapped against a cooler exterior wall, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold. The visible spots are likely just the surface manifestation; the root cause is moisture trapped within the wall cavity. Simply wiping the surface will not address this, and the mold will almost certainly return within weeks.

Given the climate and the high likelihood of hidden moisture, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact source of condensation within the wall. The remediation process for this involves not just cleaning but often creating ventilation channels or addressing insulation gaps to prevent recurrence. For health safety and a permanent fix, calling a pro to diagnose the underlying cause is the most effective path.
