Can I clean closet black mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a bit for a while, and now I’ve found a patch of black mold on the back wall and some of our shoes. It’s not huge, maybe the size of a dinner plate, but I’m worried about it spreading. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach or a vinegar solution, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

In Dubai's climate, a small mold patch from an AC leak is a common issue. For an area the size of a dinner plate, you can attempt to clean it yourself if you are healthy and not sensitive to mold. The critical first step is to fix the AC leak; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of cleaning.

Use a diluted vinegar solution or a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like drywall. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. Discard any moldy porous items like the shoes, as they are nearly impossible to fully remediate.

You should seek a professional assessment if the mold is on drywall, as the structure behind the wall may be more extensively contaminated. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal cameras to assess the full extent of water damage. Given the constant high humidity and AC use here, hidden condensation can fuel significant growth. A professional remediation would involve containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure it doesn't spread spores through your home. For peace of mind, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly clean.
