Can I clean closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest room in Jumeirah that we barely use has felt really damp lately, and I just opened the closet to find black spots on the back wall and a few of our stored bags. This probably started after the humidity spiked a couple of months ago but we're only seeing it now. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to make sure it's not hidden somewhere else?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Jumeirah guest room, I strongly advise against attempting to clean this mold yourself with bleach. The presence of black spots on the wall and stored items, combined with a persistent damp feeling, indicates a moisture issue that extends beyond a simple surface problem. The high humidity we experience in Dubai, especially during the summer months, creates a perfect environment for mold growth within wall cavities, behind baseboards, and in HVAC systems—places you cannot see or effectively treat with DIY methods.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. It also fails to address the underlying humidity source, guaranteeing rapid regrowth. More critically, disturbing the mold by cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and creating an indoor air quality issue.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation requires identifying and eliminating the moisture source—often condensation from year-round AC use or a minor leak—followed by professional-grade antimicrobial application and containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination. For a situation like yours, a comprehensive inspection by a certified professional is essential. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to locate hidden moisture and mold that are not visible to the naked eye.

For a definitive assessment and a remediation plan that addresses the root cause, I recommend contacting our team at Saniservice. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a detailed inspection.
