Can I clean closet mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My wardrobe in the bedroom has started smelling really damp, and I just found a bunch of small black spots on the back of my winter jackets and some leather bags. It's been crazy humid the last few weeks, and I think the lack of air circulation in there caused it. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or a bleach solution, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company to stop it from spreading?

Small, isolated mold growth on non-porous surfaces can often be cleaned yourself. For leather bags and jacket surfaces, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Thoroughly dry the items in sunlight afterward, as moisture is the root cause.

However, given the damp smell and location in a closed wardrobe, the visible spots are likely just the tip of the issue. The mold has probably penetrated into the porous backing of the wardrobe itself and possibly the wall behind it. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer, creates perfect conditions for this hidden growth. Simply wiping the surface will not address the colony's core.

For a recurring problem, a strong musty odor, or if the affected area is larger than one square meter, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the moisture source—often condensation from an exterior wall or lack of air circulation—and use tools like moisture meters to find hidden spread. Proper remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated porous materials, and using HEPA filtration, not just surface cleaning. A certified company can also provide post-remediation verification to ensure the issue is resolved.
