Can I clean closet mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to get these black specks on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. It’s been crazy humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of air circulation back there caused it. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or a specific spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black specks on leather goods in a Jumeirah apartment closet during a period of high humidity—this is a classic case of mold growth, almost certainly due to condensation and poor air circulation, which is a common issue in Dubai's climate where year-round AC use can create significant temperature differentials.

For a small, surface-level contamination on non-porous items, a DIY approach can be attempted. You can carefully clean the hard surfaces of the closet and the exterior of your leather items with a solution of distilled white vinegar or a supermarket-bought fungicidal spray. However, this is a temporary measure. Crucially, leather is a porous material. If the mold has begun to grow into the material, surface cleaning will not eradicate the root structure (hyphae), and the mold will almost certainly return.

The primary concern is identifying and correcting the source of the moisture. In a sealed closet, this is likely due to condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the stagnant, warmer air in the closet. Simply cleaning without addressing this will lead to recurrence.

For porous items like leather bags and shoes, and to ensure the problem is completely resolved at its source, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use specialized tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact cause of the condensation. Remediation involves not only the safe removal of the mold but also providing solutions to prevent recurrence, such as improving ventilation or using a dehumidifier.

For a proper assessment and to protect your valuable belongings, I advise calling our certified team for an inspection. Please contact us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
