Can I clean closet mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It wasn't there when I stored our winter clothes a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse. I’m worried it’s spreading behind the clothes. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to check for a bigger problem?

Based on the details you've provided, this is a classic scenario we see frequently in Dubai, especially with the recent spike in humidity. An interior wall closet is a prime location for mold due to lack of air circulation and potential hidden condensation issues.

While a small, surface-level patch might be tempting to tackle with bleach, I strongly advise against it for a few reasons. First, bleach is a strong biocide but it's mostly water. It will lighten the visible stain but the water content can actually feed the mold roots (hyphae) deeper in the drywall, causing it to return worse than before. More critically, if the mold appeared this quickly and you suspect it's spreading behind the clothes, it's a major red flag for a concealed moisture problem, possibly from a small plumbing leak in the wall or significant condensation buildup.

For a case like yours, a professional inspection is absolutely recommended. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture behind the wall without unnecessary damage. This is crucial because just cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix if the water source isn't identified and resolved. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines on moisture control and indoor air quality for this exact reason, as persistent mold can lead to health issues and property damage.

To properly assess the extent and get a permanent solution, I'd suggest calling our team for a comprehensive inspection. We can determine if it's a simple fix or requires remediation.
