Can I clean damp black mold myself or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were rearranging furniture, and the wall feels a bit damp to the touch. Is this something I can clean with vinegar and bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies in Dubai?

Black mold behind furniture in a Dubai bedroom is a common issue, often caused by condensation from the AC unit meeting the warm, humid air. The damp wall you feel confirms a moisture problem that must be fixed first; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of cleaning.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. However, bleach is not recommended on porous surfaces like drywall as it only bleaches the surface and does not kill the roots, while vinegar is a milder fungicide. A better DIY solution is a diluted detergent solution. Scrub gently to avoid releasing spores, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and seal the area from the rest of your home.

Given the symptoms your children are experiencing and the wall's dampness, this indicates a persistent moisture issue that requires investigation. The mold behind the wardrobe is likely just the visible part of a larger problem. In this case, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the moisture source (like a leaking AC condensation line or wall seepage), assess the full extent of growth, and perform remediation that controls spore release. For health concerns with vulnerable individuals, a lab test to identify the mold species is the only way to confirm the actual risk level.
