Can I clean damp wall mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be our bedroom closet. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed the back wall feels damp and has these small black speckles, probably from all the humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar and a scrub brush, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company right away?

It depends on the extent. For a small, damp patch with surface-level speckles, a DIY approach can be a first step. However, Dubai's high humidity means the moisture source is the primary issue, and without addressing that, the mold will return.

You can clean a small area (under one square meter) with a solution of detergent and water, not vinegar, which is often ineffective. Scrub gently to avoid releasing spores, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. Thoroughly dry the area afterwards with a fan. Crucially, you must find and fix the dampness source. In a closet against an exterior wall, this is often condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the outside heat, or a hidden plumbing leak.

If the area is larger than one square meter, the wall feels soft, the mold has a musty odor, or the dampness persists after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly advised. This is especially true with health symptoms present, as hidden mold within the wall cavity could be affecting indoor air quality. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact moisture source and can perform lab analysis to identify the mold type, which informs the correct remediation protocol. For a confirmed case impacting health, a science-driven company with proper containment procedures is necessary to prevent cross-contamination during cleanup.
